Ice, Sea, Dead People – Teeth Union
Lost Toys/Dirty

If ISDP’s thoroughly discomfiting debut album Teeth Union is anything to go by, the death of rock n’ roll will be an inside job. Almost plumbing No Wave depths of deconstruction at times, the band’s scathing post-hardcore racket reveals an obsession with smashing both rhythmic conventions and listener expectations. The feel is itchy, jerky; the instruments appear at times to be in competition with one another, squealing off on tangents while vocal barks just about hold the track together. The brief snippets when the noise congeals into cohesive pummelling recall the Jesus Lizard at their nastiest, and these flashes reveal just how sharp this lot can be. Early single ‘Hence: Elvis’ is the pick of the bunch, its rapid stop-start jabs giving way to rollicking punk, punctuated by some brief mathy noodling and a false ending which sets up an explosive finale. Elsewhere, some fantastic ideas poke through the white noise only to be discarded after a few bars, which makes Teeth Union a frustrating and ultimately unsatisfying experience. Lee Gorman
