Caro Emerald – Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor
Grandmono

The chic ambience of Fifties swing-inflected music seems to escape sounding dated in a way that tunes that lean too much on the Sixties don’t. If it was completely credible that Amy Winehouse lived, breathed and perspired the trauma that was contained within her lyrics, Caro Emerald has that rare ability to convince you that she really is living a vicarious high-life in the casinos of Monte Carlo or draping herself lasciviously over a piano in a Soho gin joint. The standout track is the single ‘Stuck’, a pumping, horn-infused slice of infectious party reverie that follows on from the equally catchy ‘Dr. Wanna Do’. ‘I Know That He’s Mine’ is a smooth soul maelstrom and ‘Absolutely Me’ oozes Riviera come-hither nonchalance. The flip side of the coin is that the Euro-jazz beat starts to wear by the time you reach ‘Back It Up’, sounding contrived rather than immediate. Already a star in her native Netherlands and across Europe, Caro Emerald packs something special. Jeremy Shields
