Gangrene – Vodka & Ayahuasca
Decon

The Alchemist has long been one of the most underappreciated producers in hip-hop. With his blunt, bruising beats, he’s made a career shedding rap music of its modern pop leanings for greats like Nas, Mobb Deep and Big Pun. It’s no surprise then that the Californian-turned-New Yorker found a collaborator in the form of Oh No, an underground rapper and producer who once cut an album using only samples from musical theatre composer Galt MacDermot. Vodka & Ayahuasca is their second album as Gangrene and, despite being producers first, MCs second, the duo continue to take on most of the rapping duties themselves. Mediocre rhymes are their obvious flaw (Oh No is a slightly better rapper than Alchemist) but, with its jagged East Coast instrumentals, Vodka & Ayahuasca is a rough gem. Dean Van Nguyen
