Pinch – Fabriclive 61
Fabric

That Bristolian producer/DJ Rob Ellis, a.k.a. Pinch, named his label Tectonic always seemed a fitting aptronym: the tangibility, the sheer physical weight behind tracks by the likes of 2562, Joker, and Addison Groove suggested earthly vibrations propelled by thick slabs of bass. Bass, of course, is an ever-present on Ellis’ contribution to the long running mix series. But bass isn’t always enough to keep the listener interested. The problem with Fabriclive 61 isn’t the tracks themselves – taken individually, many of them are enjoyably mutated variations on UK bass music, spanning from cosmic Kompakt pastiches (Pinch & Quest’s ‘In Dreams’), to Roska’s typically swinging brand of funky, to straight up wobble. The problem, lies in a lack of narrative propulsion. The best of the Fabric mixes – say Michael Mayer’s, or Luciano’s – are about build and release; Pinch never really lets up, never gives the listener time to reflect, and as such the mix could be any one of the daily podcasts foisted upon us by hundreds of websites.
