The latest long-player from the Hyperdub stable, a typically rich and brimming affair, comes courtesy of DVA, well known for hosting a much-loved breakfast show on London’s Rinse FM. Perhaps thanks to said breakfast show, DVA appears to have an extremely fat diary of contacts as he has managed to rope in no less than seven vocalists from across the UK bass spectrum to feature on Pretty Ugly’s 12 colour-saturated tracks.
Gathering such an array of distinctive singers is surely a deliberate ploy on DVA’s part, as the instrumentation is maximalist and varied, shifting stylistic gears repeatedly, and second-guessing the listener at every other turn. It’s a psychedelic blast of a record, dancing gleefully along a peculiarly shaped and perforated fence between chart pop and the dubstep underground. Darragh McCausland
