Though not as critically acclaimed as Fabric’s mix CD series, !K7 have had a pretty decent strike rate with their DJ KiCKS compilations; this compilation collects tracks recorded exclusively for inclusion on their parent albums. The depth of styles explored, though mainly operating within the generic parameters of house or techno, makes up for the lack of cohesion inherent to albums of this kind. From Hot Chip’s arch disco-pop and The Juan MacLean’s thudding Chicago throwback to Kode9’s mutated, fractured dub and Gold Panda’s delicate contemporary-IDM, the listener grasps a sense of a job well done. A simple idea – a great selection of songs, by a great selection of artists – simply, and brilliantly, executed. Josh Baines
