They arrived spectral and mysterious, early demos hinting at a new band of rare promise. And once we got over confusing them with XX Teens (didn’t take long), we were completely smitten. The album isn’t just one of the best British albums of this year, nor simply one of the best debuts – it’s one of 2009’s best collections of songs by anyone, from anywhere. They recently lost guitarist/keyboard player Baria Qureshi and are down to a three-piece, but that will only be a blip. Talent as blindingly brilliant as this will not be denied.
