A couple of years ago, folky indie types The Cave Singers piqued our interest for two reasons. One, the connection with the then recently defunct post-punkers Pretty Girls Make Graves, whose bassist Derek Fudesco switched to guitar for the new band. Two, the spooky video to the excellent single ‘Dancing On Our Graves’, which we featured early last year in issue 43.
Well it’s time to rejoice, Cave Singers followers, for they have made a quick return with new album Welcome Joy due for release on August 17 through Matador Records. Recorded with Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer, Ladyhawk), we are promised a “richer” sound this time round, and while we can’t yet vouch for the whole thing, the two preview tracks they are offering for free download are whetting our aural appetites just nicely, thank you very much.
‘At The Cut’ is a gritty, bluesy hoe-down, while the more contemplative ‘Beach House’ is the kind of lament made to be played on a rocking chair on a Midwest porch, with nothing but wheat fields for miles around. Download them here and here.
