Sigur Rós aren’t given to sitting still for too long, and true to form frontman Jónsi Birgisson has emerged barely a year after the band’s last album with a new ambient project, Jónsi & Alex. The ‘Alex’ of the title is Jónsi’s boyfriend Alex Somers (above, right), who sings in fellow Icelandic group Parachutes and has worked on much of Sigur Rós’s artwork in the past. The pair have published two books of art as well as contributing to the recent Dark Was The Night compilation under the name Riceboy Sleeps.
That track, ‘Happiness’, is the opening song on their upcoming debut album Riceboy Sleeps, which also features a track you can download for free. Point your browser at http://jonsiandalex.com, give them your email address and you will shortly be in possession of album track ‘Boy 1904′.
We are told that the album was recorded solely with acoustic instruments, but such has been the post-production that you wouldn’t know it. This is beautifully delicate, wordless (though not wholly instrumental) ambient music that, over the course of the album, must surely cast a hypnotic spell. ‘Boy 1904′ is a tantalising glimpse at what is to come, at any rate.
RICEBOY SLEEPS BY JONSI & ALEX IS OUT ON JULY 20 ON PARLOPHONE.
