After the Jamaican force of nature’s frankly astonishing performance in the World Athletics Championships, Rhode Island’s finest are back to remind us that there’s another Bolt around with the power to slam you backwards against the wall. We are, of course, talking about noise duo Lightning Bolt, who have been uncharacteristically quiet of late, nearly four years having passed since the release of third album Hypermagic Mountain. They appear to be back up to speed, though, if new track ‘Colossus’ is anything to go by.
Taken from their new album Earthly Delights (out on October 19 through longtime label Load Records), the track is an aptly titled epic. Weighing in at seven-and-a-quarter minutes, it begins in much less frantic fashion than much of their previous stuff. However, once it gets going, you couldn’t be listening to anyone else. Initially based around slow, sludgy metal riffola, the pace picks up with some wah-wah psychedelia and Brian Chippendale’s trademark bug-eyed drumming. We can’t wait for the album.
