Komodo Recordings

If there was one word that could describe Komodo Recordings it would be professional. This family team are driven by a serious dedication to their craft, and their will to work with bands and artists with the same drive and focus towards their craft.

A wall of soundThe studio is based in the countryside setting of Hillsborough. Run by the Walker family, there is a relaxed and friendly feeling surrounding the enterprise, which makes for a perfect recording environment

The two-man team is comprised of producer/engineer Alwyn, and younger brother Darrell responsible for the mastering of the Alwyn’s recordings. Metal acts such as Gama Bomb, Chosen and Overoth have worked with Komodo over the past year on various projects, although the brothers also deal with traditional indie and rock bands.

The studio is on the lookout for bands keen to record albums, with Alwyn then hoping to take the band’s finished material over to numerous record labels in the mainland. They’re currently running a competition to win recording time in the studio and urge hopeful bands to send them a press pack. “We place originality in high regard. If that means phoning us up in a helium voice and sending a furry pink envelope, then so be it!” jokes Darrell.

As regards buying time with the studio, Alwyn recommends booking your recording time in a block, rather than working over a series of weekends.

“It means you can get into each other’s musical wavelengths quicker, and it’s more efficient for band and engineer if you are operating together over a set period of time, rather than breaking your time into segments.”

Much of the Komodo equipment is portableMuch of the equipment used in Komodo is portable, and Alwyn has no qualms with setting up the studio in a different location, such as a holiday home, if it will provide the band a better place to work. This also means Alwyn’s services are available for choirs and orchestras. The equipment can be set up in performance halls with relative ease to capture such ensembles in a more convenient space.

Alwyn is motivated by bringing out the best in whoever he works with, and goes so far as to send out an advice pack to bands he will be working with, covering everything they should do in order to be best prepared for their time in the studio. Even after recording has finished, it is not uncommon for Alwyn and Darrell to spend their spare evenings tweaking what has been recorded during the day. This sort of service comes at no extra charge, and demonstrates their dedication to their clients.
