BEST OF 2007: Duke Special

Duke Special, aka Peter Wilson, has been having an amazing time lately. ‘Songs From The Deep Forest’, AU’s number one album of 2006, has continued its upward momentum and he’s enjoyed a series of sold out tours and special shows. Here he reveals some of the key moments in his year.

How was your 2007?
Well, 2007 started with some European dates, an appearance on French TV programme Taratata where I got to share a joke with Bryan Ferry as the closing credits rolled. There followed much touring of Ireland, the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Swindon. I have had the pleasure of recording with Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy), Romeo Stodart (Magic Numbers), Emily Loizeau and Beth Rowley. I got to play at Glastonbury for the first time where I was blown away by Iggy Pop. Got to play two concerts with orchestras, had the Prague Symphony Orchestra perform on ‘Our Love Goes Deeper’ and performed nine themed nights with Burlesque dancers and acrobats, songsheets, choirs and a big band. There was a solo tour in Ireland in theatres and smaller venues which brought me back to some places I went to in the beginning of touring as Duke Special. There was lots more but I think that’s plenty.

What was the highlight?
Headlining the Ulster Hall in Belfast was really thrilling as was playing sold out shows through UK and Ireland. The process of writing and recording ‘Our Love Goes Deeper’ was really satisfying. I think playing Wembley and the Royal Albert Hall at the end of the tour I am currently on with Crowded House will be amazing.

What were your lowlights?
Chip has just shrunk his favourite green jumper, which is a bit of a blow.

What was the weirdest thing that happened to you this year?
My friend Ben who plays clarinet and sax and is currently sitting beside me has just been asked to play at a Jazz Christian Naturist gig. I might guest.

Did you achieve everything you set out to at the start of the year?
I have just recorded the theme tune for Sesame Tree, an offshoot of Sesame Street. If I had known it might be a possibility I would have set out to do it at the start of the year thus fulfilling this wish.

Did you make any new musical discoveries?
Beth Rowley.

What was your favourite live moment (either your own or someone else’s)?
Stage diving at Electric Picnic.

What was the biggest musical disappointment?
Not stage diving at Glastonbury.

In ten years time how do you think you’ll view this year in your life?
Act 1 scene 3

Sum up your 2007 in seven words
Swindon, arrested, fraud, pants, lawyer, telescopic, restraining, order.

What are you hoping for in 2008?
An acquittal.
