BEST OF 2007: Jetplane Landing

‘Backlash Cop’ was without a doubt the comeback album of the year. It was also a straight up dose of rocking funk, killer hooks and endless invention. Sadly, there were no live shows to promote it but that just gives us something to look forward to in 2008. In the meantime, Jamie Burchell dishes the goss on his 2007.

How was your 2007?
It was interesting. We released our third album, ‘Backlash Cop’ to pretty good reviews. I think it polarised listeners a bit, but most people who stuck with it seemed to get into it in the end. It’s a bit hard for me to gauge a true reaction to the record as I was travelling for seven months of the year. Right now I am living in a tiny village in the south of France.

What were your highlights?
Taking a ride on the back of a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City during rush-hour.

What were your lowlights?
Getting an ulcer on my left eyeball – it hurt like blue fuck.

What was the weirdest thing that happened to you this year?
I moved to France. I live in a Castle built in the 17th century. I feel like Sting saying that.

Did you achieve everything you set out to at the start of the year?
Almost.

Did you make any new musical discoveries?
I have started to enjoy the odd Tom Waits album during a late night session. Not a new artist but new to me.

What was your favourite album by another band or artist?
‘Let’s Stay Friends’, by Les Savy Fav.

What was your favourite live moment (either your own or someone else’s)?
Prince at the O2.

What was the biggest musical disappointment?
Not getting to play ‘Backlash Cop’ in front an audience…yet.

In ten years time how do you think you’ll view this year in your life?
A big one.

Sum up your 2007 in seven words
Oh boy, I never saw that coming.

What are you hoping for in 2008?
To make another record, to improve my French and maybe, to play a few shows.
