Ash - Single A (True Love 1980)

Quote:
ASH. release the first of their A-Z singles on the 12th of October.

Single A, or True Love 1980 as it's officially named will kick off the 26 singles of the A-Z series which will see the band releasing a new single every fortnight for the next 52 weeks.

Rising to the challenge of the creative Everest that is a 26 single campaign, with True Love 1980 Tim Wheeler has delivered a typically monumental piece of pop; tapping into Ash's trademark hooks and three piece dynamism, while reveling in the possibilities of their groundbreaking studio project. True Love 1980 follows the critically acclaimed free download single Return Of White Rabbit dropped earlier this summer… Where Return of White Rabbit showcased angular guitars and growling basslines, True Love 1980 delivers a perfect slice of Back-To-The-Future synth pop balladry from Ash's hit writing engine room.

White Rabbit was great, a real breath of fresh air.

I'm not entirely sure what they're trying to do with True Love 1980, but I'm assuming they haven't succeded.

Not particularly impressed.

The problem with releasing one song every two weeks means that each track will be held up to more scrutiny... it's going to be hard to get away with releasing tracks that would have been album filler. It's not a great track, thank God they released Return of White Rabbit before this one.

We were discussing this in the office yesterday, and the feeling was that perhaps by releasing White Rabbit first, they set the bar too high.

I'm not sure myself, but perhaps True Love wouldn't sound so bad if I didn't know they were capable of so much better?

Fair point. However, my thinking was more that Ash needed a big, big song so that they'd get the hype necessary for the singles series AND remind us that they're still knocking about. The first single can make or break an album for me because it gives you a hint of what's to come.

To give a teeny example, I liked Plans by Death Cab but it was a bit too poppy for me. There was a lot of talk about how the next record was going to be darker etc, which I thought was just the band trying to fob off the older fans. When they released "I Will Possess Your Heart" they proved they weren't talking crap with the new album, and it was nice and intense at times.

What I want to know is, will Tim Wheeler ever tire of writing lovelorn, "boy meets girl"-type lyrics? It's getting a bit tired at this stage.

Also, "Don't be scared of your emotions/I will give you my devotions"

Now that, my friends, is a shitty lyric if ever I saw one
