The Choice Music Prize awards ceremony was held in Dublin last night, with Ritual by Jape being announced as the Irish album of the year for 2008. Jape is the electro-pop alter ego of Redneck Manifesto guitarist Richie Egan, who wins €10,000 as well as a specially commissioned award.
Ritual, his third album, was chosen from a shortlist of 10 by a panel of 12 Irish music insiders, who reportedly had to resort to a secret ballot to decide the winner, so close was the decision. Six of the nominated artists played at the ceremony at Vicar Street, Dublin, which was hosted by Today FM’s Alison Curtis. The full list of nominated albums is after the jump.
