Young Derry outfit Organized Confusion has come out top in an Ireland-wide search for the best school-age bands and won a slot at Oxegen. The School of Rock competition was organised by RTE 2FM and after regional heats, the band beat four others in a daunting live final on the station.
The lads – Niall Doherty (vocals and guitar), Ben Barber (guitar and vocals), Ryan McGroarty (bass and vocals) and Kieran Coyle (drums) – were representing their school, Lumen Christi College in the city, and walked away with this impressive little haul of prizes as well as the Oxegen gig -
- €5,000 gift voucher for Walton’s Music Shops.
- 5 days’ recording time in Pulse Recording Studios in Dublin.
- An interview with Hot Press.
- A photo shoot with music photographer Enda Casey.
- A DAB Digital radio for each band member.
- An award for their school.
Not bad at all. Especially the last one, which we are sure they were especially excited about… The judges included 2FM presenter (and former Kerbdog and Wilt frontman) Cormac Battle and Mark Greaney, formerly of JJ72 and now of Concerto For Constantine.
Battle said, “The level at which the bands were operating for school kids was astounding, especially their ability to perform live on national radio. Congratulations to the winners Organized Confusion, they looked good and sounded good… they’ll go a long way.”
Greaney said, “It was a truly rewarding experience to be part of something which, from day one, set out to unearth young musical talent. We ended up with a worthy winner, but every band must feel immense pride and a sense of achievement for having the courage, and confidence to take part. Hopefully, this competition has been the spark to have lit a long lasting flame in all who took part.”
