The animal rights group People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals have asked the Pet Shop Boys to change their name to Rescue Shelter Boys, in order to draw attention to the “cruelty” suffered by many animals in pet shops.
The letter, posted by the band on their website, says: “Dear Neil and Chris. You have many loyal fans of the Pet Shop Boys here at Peta. We have a request that may at first seem bizarre, but we hope that after considering the following facts, you will understand why we are asking this of you: will you please consider changing your name from the Pet Shop Boys to the Rescue Shelter Boys.” And then they proceed to describe these poor circumstances.
Well, bizarre, it might be, but while the band declined to change their name, they admit that “it raises an issue worth thinking about”. Hopefully, Peta’s Pet Shop Boys fans won’t be too upset with their decision and still buy their new album Yes, due out on April 21.
