Radiohead Hit Number One

The physical release of the seventh Radiohead studio record ‘In Rainbows’ has reached the number one spot of the UK album charts in the first week of its release. It beat Take That’s ‘Beautiful World’ down to the number two position.

While it might have been a quiet week for album releases in general (‘In Rainbows’ was the only new entry in the Top 40) it’s still a good achievement considering the album was made available for download in December. It’s also good news because it means that they are more popular than Take That, a fact which resulted in geeky, snobbish music lovers throwing impromptu parties the world over (or so we heard).

Elsewhere, Thom Yorke commented, when speaking to BBC 4’s Today programme, that releasing an album solely via the internet would have been “stark raving mad”. This is kind of funny considering how many artists have been talking about following the ‘Radiohead model’ of pay-what-you-like album release lately. Apparently the band sell 80% of their releases as physical products, so we expect that many of the initial supporters of this method to do a little back-pedaling soon.
