Vampire Weekend’s second album Contra is out on January 11, and the preppy New Yorkers have released a free single via their website. Click here to grab it. The opening track on the album, ‘Horchata’ (a Hispanic drink, says Wikipedia) is instantly recognisable as a Vampire Weekend song, with Ezra Koenig’s clipped vocals and a hiccupy melody, but listen closer and some interesting ideas will seep out. For a start, there are no guitars, or traditional ‘rock band’ instrumentation of any kind. There’s an electronic pulse underpinning the verse, embellished by lots of percussion, strings and keyboard-based instruments of varying hues. It’s wistful, welcoming, addictive and an extremely promising return.
