Girl Talk - Night Ripper
For six years now, Pennsylvanian Gregg Gillis has been the king of cut-up: a sampling phenomenon whose records and live shows bring the art of mashup DJing to frighteningly proficient new levels. Night Ripper features snippets of songs by dozens of artists, cut and pasted together at bewildering speed. Just as bewildering is the range of artists on show – anything is fair game for Gillis, be it rap (and he seems particularly fond of the Dirty South), alt rock, AOR or commercial pop, he really isn’t bothered. To him, it’s all music and it’s all a resource for him to do as he pleases with. However, as impressive as the craftsmanship on this extended mix is, you may find it a stretch to sit through the whole thing. After a while, you can tire of hearing a familiar riff or hookline and long to dig out the song he’s taken it from. Pregnant women and those with heart trouble, especially, should approach with caution. Six-year-old kids will love it, though. Chris Jones
