Adebisi Shank - This Is The EP Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank

Popular

Irish trio Adebisi Shank have thrilled anyone who has seen them live, and their debut EP (re-released in anticipation of the band’s Japanese tour) is manna for listeners who love chaotic, hyperactive, guitar-driven gonzo-rock. Opener ‘Horse’ bucks and bounces like an untamed colt. Excluding the “hup-hup-hup-hup woooo!” of the joyous ‘Jump Cut’, the four tracks are lyricless. They don’t falter. Immediate, varied and aggressive, Adebisi Shank’s distinction is Lar Kaye’s wild guitar, using effects and tapped patterns to make the instrument sound like a laser gun. Straightforward, pounding drums form a driving backdrop on the left-turn-right ‘You Shouldn’t Be In White’, where the strings scream like Ermintrude the electrical elephant. The crescendo chords of ‘Caddyshank’ create a white-hot high. The EP is a thrilling template, the perfect perch from which to launch a full-length assault. If Adebisi Shank harness and channel this energy on their upcoming album, they’ll have a record that connects with real force. Until then, they’re a party in a pinball machine, and the EP remains an essential purchase. Chesty LaRue
