Anti-Flag - The Bright Lights Of America
Hassle
Major label punks hit out at the state of the political climate. The ongoing relevance of the subject matter doesn’t stop it seeming like a tired, over-played hand which becomes all the harder to take seriously with every successive release and each incremental shift towards becoming a stadium rock act. It’s all a bit trite and clichéd. It’s definitely not very punk.
This eighth stab at political activism (or is this passivism? It is just music, after all) sounds an awful lot like AFI’s most recent output, and Anti-Flag seem to be following in their footsteps away from their punk roots into the mainstream consciousness. What it lacks in sincerity it will no doubt make up for with marketing, and the teenage rebels will lap it up. Even though it’s really not very good. Michael Wilson
