Autechre - Quaristice

Warp

Autechre’s ninth album continues the radical experimentalism of previous releases Confield and Untilted. Parts of Quaristice push the very boundaries of what can reasonably be called music – ‘Fol3’, for example, is absolutely cacophonous. Elsewhere, surprising moments of mournful beauty emerge, such as halfway through ‘Simm’, where the nagging, insistent beats give way to a doleful drone. The final quarter of the album increases the tune quotient in the form of the playful ‘Bnc Castl’, the dark, juddering ‘Rale’ and the pretty ‘Theswere’. Complex and varied, at 20 songs and 73 minutes long it’s not easy going, but (as ever with Autechre) patience brings rewards. Neill Dougan
