Bilge Pump - Rupert The Sky

Gringo

Undeterred by the NME’s ‘Unlistenable Guff’ tag in the late Nineties, Bilge Pump recorded two Peel sessions in 2003 and have finally released their second album, Rupert The Sky on their own Gringo label. To call it unlistenable seems harsh. but the music is definitely challenging, blending free-jazz bass rhythms with angular, progressive guitar lines and Emlyn Jones’ mischievous lyrics into a dense, hardcore cacophony. There are shades of the mighty Stump on the less convoluted material, like ‘I Am Perfectly Fine’ with its wonderful opening couplet, “We were genuine happy children / but our dad was a bit of a cunt.” This is the sound of The Minutemen playing The Melvins’ songbook in the Home Counties.
