Fresh from the Brooklyn underground, one would expect duo Black Gold’s sound to be infused with the soul and attitude of the city’s underbelly. Instead, their debut album Rush comprises 11 brief guitar-pop numbers brimming with synth-heavy rhythms similar to what so many of their contemporaries are peddling. Despite occasional stand-out moments like opener ‘Detroit’, Black Gold simply don’t have the originality or charm to make their own musings stand out from the crowd. With vocals that fail to hit the mark, particularly in the never-ending ‘Canyon’ and the clichéd lyrical matter, Rush isn’t exactly the most original of sounds or indeed very memorable for that matter either.
