More indie that a whip-swinging archaeologist, this charming little gem from Dublin songstress Cathy Davey has won her a Meteor award not to mention celebrity fans ranging from Graham Coxon to REM. Recorded largely at her home on drum, guitar, bass and piano Tales Of Silversleeve may be lo-fi but its deceptively Sundays-like simplicity is layered with elaborate rhythms and genre-splicing musical arrangements which create a vast sonic landscape.
Reggae, rockabilly, funk and folk are all melded together to create an intoxicating delight whilst Davey’s vocals; delicate but powerful, fragile but piercing hold the listener in her grasp and refuse to let go. With tracks to please both the radio DJ and Indie purist, Tales Of Silversleeve is a treat with a magic and a charm all its own. Brendan Deeds
