The influence of TV On The Radio is all over this album, which is unsurprising as it was produced by David Sitek, one of the lynchpins of the aforementioned band. However, while TV On The Radio possess an exploratory sound, a desire to push forward, develop and refine, Celebration are too scattershot. A bizarre fairground organ seems to be one of their signature sounds, and doesn’t always sit well with the Sonic Youth/My Bloody Valentine guitar attack, or the offbeat repetitions and structures. The vocals are also reminiscent of that ‘not quite soul’ TV On The Radio style, and don’t always gel. The end result is a record that has a fairly unified sound, but somehow slightly schizophrenic too. There are some fine moments here, but one always gets the feeling that they’re in search of a point.
