Who is Lily Perdida? Clue To Kalo set out to answer this, with each song coming from the perspective of different people in Lily’s fictional life. So we have songs from her parents, siblings, friends and even a narrator. A concept album in the strictest sense. The songs meander from breezy near-melancholy to poppy sweetness, with layer upon drenched layer of pianos, harps, organs and shiny-shiny glockenspiels. However, there’s an unfortunate feeling of nothingness to it all. The melodies, whilst pretty, just aren’t compelling enough. The Elliott Smith-style vocals are a little insistent, never stopping for breath and leaving little room for anything to sink in. Yet Clue to Kalo seem very capable of something much more exciting. Perhaps the concept of a concept album has limited their musical ideas? Dominic Coyle
