Even - Even

Rubber Records

Power pop is a genre that never seems to go out of fashion, largely because it’s never really been in fashion. Big, jangling chords, pounding drums and sing-a-long choruses have been many a band’s bread and butter since the days when Big Star first jangled their way onto the scene in the early Seventies. However, the immediate problem is that the ‘pop’ half of ‘power-pop’ is a largely subjective term, and it rarely means ‘popular’.

Coming on like a less polished Dandy Warhols, Even set out their stall pretty quickly, with Ash Naylor’s laid-back drawl intoning all manner of cool sounding but meaningless soundbites, whilst the band chug along behind them. Even suffer from the same difficulty as the Dandy Warhols in that they are trying their best to sound bored and blasé, but it comes off as being too studied to be convincing.

That’s not to say that there isn’t a wealth of good tunes to be found, as Even know their way around a tune, and every song twists and turns, sounding like it could be a big hit in another dimension. Sadly, it ain’t this dimension, though. Steven Rainey
