Ye would have got long odds, gentle reader, on dour Scots like Glasvegas releasing a bona fide seasonal classic, but ride me sideways with a frozen Lidl turkey if A Snowflake Fell isn’t just that. The key to its success lies in the subtle way in which its festive influences are incorporated. The hymnal tracks which bookend the album are the only overtly Christmassy moments; the other four tracks sound like debut album Glasvegas, but with a revelatory sense of restraint and depth. Witness the gorgeous strings and buried chimes of the understated ‘Cruel Moon’ or the slow-burning title track’s twinkling, sleigh bell-augmented magic for proof that there’s a lot more to these maudlin merrymakers than previously suspected.
