Don’t get us wrong, we love Fleet Foxes at AU. We also have a soft spot for their drummer, Joshua Tillman. Quite where he finds the time for this, his sixth solo album, and third major release of 2009 (after the album Vacilando Territory Blues and his Isle Land EP), we’ll never know. Year In The Kingdom was recorded in two April weeks, with Tillman adding a dulcimer and a “wheezing” air organ to his wilderness hymns. Jenna Conrad’s arrangements lift the intimate lo-fi feel and JT’s voice is as haunting, and haunted, as ever. But, although the title track offers a lighter shade, and ‘Though I Have Wronged You’ possesses a redemptive mantra, much of Year In The Kingdom meanders prettily along in the background. We’ll wait for the second Fleet Foxes album, thank you very much. John Freeman
