Jaguar Love - Take Me To The Sea

Matador

Two parts Blood Brothers (Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato) to one part Pretty Girls Make Graves (Jay Clark), Jaguar Love are in the fortunate position of having a ready-made fanbase waiting expectantly for this debut album. Their reaction will be interesting, as Take Me To The Sea bears only scant resemblance to the parent bands, and especially to The Blood Brothers. Frontman Johnny Whitney has spoken of becoming tired of the aggression of his old band’s music, and feeling an urge to do something more melodic. He’s got his wish.

Though still screeching his way through the record, there’s precious little screaming, and the effect is more akin to a ballsier Hot Hot Heat, or the frantic post-punk of Thunderbirds Are Now! and Les Savy Fav. Pretty Girls guitarist Clark’s switch to drums is an unmitigated triumph, and the energy and winning songwriting are infectious, once you get past the fact that there appears to be a Chipmunk on vocals. A good start, at the very least. Chris Jones
