Kunk - We’re Not Who You Think We Are

Plastic Sun Records

‘Come and fly with us, we will take you for a ride’ demand ‘Kunk’ at the beginning of their latest single, and if you are a fan of shouty, discordant grunge, how could you refuse? The erratic verse and melodic chorus of ‘We’re Not Who You Think We Are’ sound like they belong to two completely different songs, they borrow Kim Deal’s backing vocals from ‘Tame’ and it all adds up to the sound of a band having a lot of fun. Elsewhere, the sludgy ‘Public Image Ltd’ has a bitchy sarcasm which is more reminiscent of ‘Johnny Rotten’ than ‘John Lydon’, and with the loud-quiet-loud dynamic of ‘Little People’, the obvious influence of ‘The Pixies’ is again apparent. Could 2008 be the year that ‘Kunk’ broke? Gerard McCann
