Lesser Panda - Ghostdance/Carousel (single)

Lesser Panda’s main vocalist Mariano Robles sounds like Robert Smith. A lot. I suspect they are aware of the fact, as The Cure are conspicuous by their absence on the band’s MySpace list of influences. It is inconceivable that their new-wave, gloomy sound – despite a more dance-orientated angle – wasn’t inspired at some level by said outfit.

The problem with ‘Ghostdance’ and ‘Carousel’ is something akin to a child’s mother arriving home with the shopping, only to unveil the inappropriate brand of cola or ketchup. Despite the offender’s assertions, and although it may taste quite good, deep down the kid knows it’s just not the same. Likewise, Lesser Panda are sure to garner some fans, but for a more authentic experience in a similar vein, check out last year’s West Coast album by Studio. Ron McCann
