Parenthetical Girls - Entanglements

Tomlab

Accessibility is not Zac Pennington’s strength. This third album, originally intended as a response to his band’s self-released debut is yet another example of this, pitting classical neo-romanticism against plaintive pop. Under a classical microscope, Entanglements is joyous. The arrangements are luxurious, blending rich blasts of woodwinds and brass with Pennington’s feminine, camp vocals. But this is intended as a pompous pop record; buoyant, expansive and full of embellishments. As a result, this set works as a sum, a complete piece of classical music, but is just infuriating in parts. Indeed, it is too much for pop, but it’s also too ambitious to ignore. Shain Shapiro
