Psychedelic Horseshit, purveyors of discordant white noise, a genre labeled by the band as ‘shitgaze’, have been heralded as the cure to modern life and music. However, their musical manifesto, as demonstrated on ‘New Wave Hippies’, promotes a decidedly anti-music ideology, based on the principles of scratchy, out-of-tune guitars and similarly out-of-tune, brawling vocals; deviant noise and disaffected youth. The title track ‘New Wave Hippies’, is a loosely held together racket and, perhaps aptly, the least accessible song here. The primitive energy running through the noise, most promisingly on the tracks ‘Portals (5am Demo)’ and ‘Silent Speed’, may redeem Psychedelic Horseshit from the brink of utter chaos (although still wishing they would tune their bloody instruments), but to label them as a cure is both presumptuous and naive.
