Qui - Love’s Miracle
Ipecac
Throw your hands up and rejoice for he has come back to us! After eight long years in the wilderness legendary Jesus Lizard front man David Yow is back where he belongs – bawling his head off over twisted, nasty rock noise. We have LA-based two-piece Qui (drummer Paul Christensen and guitarist Matt Cronk) to thank for luring Yow out of retirement to front their band. So beloved were The Jesus Lizard that we would be happy just to hear more of the same but Qui are no Jesus Lizard Part II. There are similarities, such as the delight taken in debasing classic rock shapes, the creeping tension and the bulldozing intensity. The absence of bass however allows Qui to be a little looser and the acid fried leads of ‘Willy The Pimp’ allow Yow to get a little swing in his cadence and even the odd melody here and there. Lyrically and vocally David Yow remains a singular talent, weaving tales of insanity, cross dressing and ice cream across the album in his inimitable fashion, ranging from high-pitched croon on the closing cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’ to frenzied urgent bark on the masterful ‘Belt’ It’s good to have him back.
