Rafter - Sex Death Cassette
‘Sex Death Cassette’ sits in the strange twilight space between ‘Multiply’-era Jamie Lidell and Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’. Before you keek yourself though, it is no way as brilliant, or focused as either of those two. There are 19 tracks here, some clocking in at under a minute each, generally two minutes and sometimes three. This scatterbrain approach does reveal many riches, but then again it is the longer tracks that show some degree of mastery. Long by their standards, ‘Chances’ shows Rafter’s burgeoning potential, and that is how this disc should be taken, as a precursor to some more potent and solid material. Still though, ‘Sex, Death, Cassette’ is, at times, oddly brilliant. Alun McKeever
