The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost

Light In The Attic

The Black Angels suffer from one huge delusion. They aspire to be the next Pink Floyd, when in truth they’re the next Kingmaker. Even inventing a genre, ‘hypno-drone ‘n’ roll’ (yawn!), a 16-page booklet detailing the band’s ‘message’ and lots of nonsense about spirituality can’t conceal the lack of tunes and one-dimensional nature of the music. The opening track is a rip-off of BRMC’s ‘Love Burns’, ‘Mission District’ sounds like something Tommy Iommi would turn out before breakfast and ‘Vikings’ is a dirge. Ensuring we don’t overlook the mysticism, there is some gratuitous sitar, but it’s just a reminder that it doesn’t work for everyone. For every ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ there are a dozen ‘Hindu Times’. The Black Angels aren’t mystics, they’re dreamers, but if Rob Reiner ever needs a rival band for a Spinal Tap sequel, these guys could play themselves. Kenny Murdock
