The Chap - Builder’s Brew
Loaf
Clearly intent on creating an avant-garde, ‘ironic’ persona, The Chap sing about the everyday in monotone, bourgeois tones. Builder’s Brew is a collection of remixes, cover versions and original material, but unfortunately even the original material is entirely derivative. Each song seems intent on rehashing what has been done before to such a degree that by the end of the album you have to wonder if it’s someone’s idea of a joke. Farcically imitative, The Chap beg, borrow and steal off everyone from Devo to Daft Punk. Utilising all that’s en vogue (cowbells, check; vocoder, check) The Chap attempt dark, post-industrial, disco-pop musings… and fail, entirely. Alice Quigley
