The Infomatics - Kill Or Create

‘Irish hip hop’. If that small phrase sends a chill through your bones, move on. If not, we may just have the album for you. Dublin’s Infomatics have already supported Edan, Nas, Soul II Soul and several more, their mainly live approach having been inspired by the likes of The Roots. Live drums and bass anchor the songs, augmented by producer BOC’s keys and synths and the rhyming of Konchus Lingo and Mr Dero. Yes, they have silly names. Good job then that they know what they’re doing. ‘Kill Or Create’ is lyrically tense, all tales of political intrigue, the Dublin rat race and social injustice. Musically though, it’s a smoker’s delight. Dubby basslines, jazzy drumming and some expert production flourishes keep things head-noddingly interesting. The heavily accented rapping isn’t their strongest suit, but this is a promising debut. Chris Jones
