The Metros - More Money Less Grief

1965

It’s a fine line between bold and tongue-in-cheek, but The Metros’ first album somehow manages to stay on the right side of that divide. These lads aren’t exactly tactful, all their songs tinged with what they describe as “working class aggression”. References to crime, education, drugs, guns and geezers ensure entertainment, while the music seems to complement the lyrical chaos. It’s a glorious combination of punk, funk, ska, with the occasional extraneous cuss word thrown in for good measure. The fact the album doesn’t slow, hold back, or get repetitive at any stage only adds to the enjoyment and sonic mayhem. It’s by no means a new sound, but it’s done well. Aaron Stoops
