The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed

Sixsevennine

Remember when it was really cool to be into The Streets? If you had a CD-R of ‘the chav Parklife’ Original Pirate Material before it hit shelves back in 2002, you could probably have scored at most parties. Then Mike got famous and loads of people thumbed their noses as the unwashed embraced him. His words were spilling out of the mouths of drunk squaddies and us cool people were well turned off. Luckily Everything Is Borrowed offers us a chance to reclaim the most likeable Brummie in history for our own. It’s intensely likeable, fun stuff. Just try listening to ‘Heaven For The Weather’ without grinning, or ‘The Escapist’ without silently grooving along. We’d love to hate Skinner, we would, but he’s got a way with a tune and creates a perfectly loveable character in our heads: he sounds Bovril-normal and kinda bummed out, like someone who’s just blown the family allowance on sex lines. It must be The Streets time again. Philip Byrne
