The Week That Was - The Week That Was
Memphis Industries
The Week That Was is the debut solo album by Peter Brewis, of Field Music fame. Their Tones Of Town album was a frustrating affair, with many good ideas tinkered with into oblivion. Unfortunately, Brewis seems affected by the same malady on these eight songs, which are fussy and strangely over-produced. Keyboards that sound like retro Fairlights create an eerily Eighties feel, but while ‘The Airport Line’ aims to sound like Talking Heads, it ends up being more Go West. ‘Yesterday’s Paper’ is overblown and overlong, and while the poppy ‘Scratch The Surface’ at least showcases Brewis’ fabulous Sunderland lilt, this is a major disappointment.
