Wooden Shjips - Vol. 1

Holy Mountain

San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips are under the influence of their locale’s long history of psychedelia and garage rock, broadening these traditions with shoegaze distortion techniques and dance drone loops. It’s a singles collection rather than an album, but only ‘Dance California’ seems to have any sort of stand-out appeal with its slow groove inducing an effective sonic trance. Unfortunately the rest suffer from over-indulgent effects and a lack of interesting ideas which detract from the band’s character rather than enhance it. Matt Nesbitt
