Young Knives - …Are Dead …And Some

Shifty Disco

This isn’t a new Young Knives album as such, but rather two earlier, short releases combined to form a full record. The material first appeared in late 2002 and mid 2003, and in comparison to last year’s brilliant ‘Voices Of Animals And Men’, it sounds like a band still finding their own, distinctive sound. The reference points hang heavy in the air, with the badge of post-punk worn clearly and proudly on their brown tweed sleeves. The unexpected highlight is found where they’ve deviated furthest from their norm on the disco-tinged, Moog-aided ‘Rollerskater’. It’s a slice of good times that would actually work a groove on the dancefloor. Newcomers to the Young Knives world would do best to stick their more recent output, but existing fans will find enough here to like, if not necessarily love.
